The most massive and luminous known star is R136a1, which is located in the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud. It has a mass of around 265 times that of the Sun and a luminosity of about 8.7 million times that of the Sun. Another example is Eta Carinae, which has a mass of around 120 times that of the sun and a luminosity of about 5 million times that of the Sun.
